A 1, 2 or 3 Day Hands-On, Photography Workshop at Swan Island Dahlia Farm, Canby, Oregon and Haystacks Rock, Cannon Beach, Oregon
Swan Island Dahlia Farms in Canby, Oregon is clearly the best place to photograph Dahlias in the United States and possibly the world. The variety and volume of Dahlias is incredible and I believe I could spend weeks photographing the amazing specimens that grow here.
From September 8th through 11th, 2019, I will be leading a group of individuals (maximum of 8 per session) to photograph with me at Swan Island Dahlia Farm and Cannon Beach, both in Oregon.
We will photograph Sunday afternoon from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm, Monday through Wednesday morning from 7:15 -10:15 am and Monday and Tuesday afternoon from 4:00 to 6:30 pm, weather permitting. During the day, we will do a photo-review with helpful hints on improving composition and some “how-to’s” for post-processing. On Monday or Tuesday (to be determined by weather condition), we will forgo the afternoon Dahlia photography session and head to Cannon Beach about 1pm so we are there in ample time to setup for photographing the Haystack Rock at sunset.
Lensbaby will be sending us evaluation lenses for the group to try-out. This is a splendid opportunity to tryout the most sought after flower photography lenses at no cost. If you decide that you would like to purchase a lens, Lensbaby will offer a 10% discount when you purchase directly through them.
I am staying at The DoubleTree by Hilton in Tigard, WA. Room rates are running about $115/night plus tax for double occupancy, so if you are going with a friend, it’s about $57.50/night plus tax to share a double blue room. Note: you may book a hotel on your own, but you will be responsible to meet with the group prior to departure each day at 7:00 am if you will be riding with us.
Each Dahlia photography session will concentrate on 1) “seeing” your subject using a macro, telephoto and/or Lensbaby lens, 2) how to approach the subject to photograph it 3) choosing an appropriate flower subject, 4) using creative angles to capture the flower subject, 5) blurring your background (when possible), 6) using natural light with diffusers and reflectors for proper exposure, 7) focus stacking, and 8) how to “dial-in” that perfect exposure using your DSLR camera.
If you have a photo umbrella, diffuser or reflector it is recommended that you bring it with you. A tripod is recommended for the Cannon Beach Shoot but may also be used at your discretion at Swan Island Dahlia Farm.
Daily Transportation Option:
Since parking is extremely limited at Swan Island Dahlias and near impossible to find at Cannon Beach, I have rented a passenger van that can transport you and your equipment to/from each photoshoot location daily. If you book the 3-day package, transportation to Swan Island Dahlias and Cannon Beach is included. If you are choosing a la carte sessions but you would like to travel with the group, the cost for transportation is $7/day. If you will be taking the opportunity to photograph with us at Cannon Beach, the transportation cost is $25 for the Round Trip.
What’s NOT Included:
Your financial responsibilities are hotel accommodations (if you so desire), food, your own transportation (if you so desire), other incidentals to be purchased at your discretion, and transportation from your home town to the Portland International Airport (PDX) or The DoubleTree by Hilton in Tigard and return. My recommendation would be Uber or Lyft. I would encourage you to purchase trip cancellation insurance if you are flying.
The Photography Workshop fee is $775 for all 3 days and includes hands-on photographic training, image review and transportation as described above. If you cannot commit to all 3 days, there is a selection of mix/match days/times to suit your needs and budget starting at just $150/session plus transportation. Please Click Here to complete the registration form.
Refunds available if I can fill your spot. If you must cancel, you are eligible for a 75% refund of your full payment, if I can fill your spot. If this Workshop is canceled for any reason, you will receive a 100% refund including the cost of transportation.
